Punjabi

At Guru Nanak Sikh Academy our all-through vision in the Panjabi department is that all language learners develop the skills and confidence to consider themselves as ‘World Citizens’ who belong to a multicultural world. We aim to support students to understand other countries and cultures so that they can be more open and adaptable to new experiences; ensuring that each topic in our curriculum contains an element of culture. The department is committed to developing strong, lifelong linguistic skills and we encourage our students to become curious and interested in language.

Through the journey from EYFS to KS5 pupils will progressively acquire the knowledge and skills to listen, speak, read and write Panjabi through high-quality and effective teaching to every child to achieve their best in Punjabi. Pupils will develop a strong understanding of script, grammar, and vocabulary. KS5, pupils will be well prepared for further study or professional use of the Panjabi language.

Pupils will achieve learning Punjabi will develop them to connect with their family, culture and heritage, building a strong sense of identity. Knowing the language also allows them to understand the teachings of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the holy scripture of Sikhism. We aim to teach students to read, write and communicate effectively in Punjabi. They learn to express ideas, ask and answer questions and have meaningful conversations. Additionally, pupils will acquire transferable skills, such as a strong grasp of grammar and strategies for learning new languages, equipping them for lifelong language learning.
