Welcome to the Year 3 page. Here you can find out about all of our fantastic cross-curricular learning that will be taking place in our classrooms as well as other important information. In Year 3 we like to have fun whilst learning and becoming more independent and responsible.
Year 3 English
In English, your child will continue to work on the spelling patterns that they have begun in previous years, with an emphasis on understanding and learning spelling rules, as well as attention to prefixes and suffixes. In writing, the children will be focusing on creativity and writing styles; looking at settings, language style and character within their writing. As well as this, your child will be learning about different genres of writing such as instructional, explanation texts and poetry. In reading, children will begin to develop their own expressions and intonation as they become more fluent. They will learn how to draw inferences such as characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, and justify inferences with evidence.
Year 3 Maths
In Maths your child will begin to use column addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers, as well as learning about multiplication and division and using and applying their times-tables knowledge. They will also learn about fractions of quantities, equivalent fractions, angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, area, perimeter and shape. Underpinning a large majority of the children’s number work, will be their quick recall of all times-tables.
Year 3 Science
Science in Year 3 is fun and fascinating! Your child will learn about life processes, rocks, light, forces and magnets, and animals. They will learn how to work scientifically and write up their investigations in a more formal way- using predictions, methods, results and conclusions-which is a key part of the KS2 Science curriculum.
Creative Curriculum
History will see the children journey through a million years of prehistory as they explore the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, discovering how humans first came to Britain and how they lived. They will go onto explore the Roman invasion of Britain, opposition from the Celts, the legacy that was left behind when they went home, and much more!
Other Information
Children are given weekly spellings in their diaries to learn at home. The children will be tested on them every Monday, so please encourage your child to practise at home. We encourage you to hear your child read at home every day and record this in their reading record. Every child in Year 3 currently has a levelled reading book, which we expect them to read. Any additional reading is great too! English homework will be set on Mondays and due on Thursdays. Maths homework will be set on Thursdays and due on Monday- the homework will consolidate learning from class. If there are any issues, please encourage your child to ask us about the work before the day it is due.
